Amino Acids
Proteins are known as the building blocks for lean tissues, not to mention its countless other functions. Proteins are made for smaller molecules called amino acids. There are approximately 20 types of amino acids that the human body needs, but only 9 of them are essential, which means that our body can’t make these amino acids and we have to get them from food. Generally,animal-based proteins contain all the essential amino acids in high enough amounts,so these are called complete protein sources. Plant-based proteins,on the other hand, are incomplete protein sources.
Plant-based vs Animal-based
It’s easy to think that since animal-based proteins are complete sources,we don’t need plant based proteins. However,it’s a healthy choice to substitute animal-based proteins with plant-based proteins a few times each week. Plant-based proteins can be combined together and with other foods to achieve a complete amino acid profile. In fact, many traditional dishes have combined foods in this way, making them healthy and enjoyable at the same time. Meals with plant-based proteins contain more fiber and less fat, especially saturated fat, compares to those consisting of mostly animal-based proteins.
A Better Choice
Reseach shows that people that eat a plant based diet tend to have better health and longevity than those who eat a heavy meat diet. Poor quality animal based proteins like meat with lots of fat or highly processed mat can harm our heath. Processsed meat usually contains nitrates and a large amount of sodium which can damage our blood vessels. The best diets contain a wide variety of different foods,so encourage yourself to try new foods while keeping a good balance.
